How We Test and Rank Lab Testing Services

Every comparison and review on this site follows the same process. This page documents it, so you can judge for yourself whether our rankings deserve your trust — and so you can hold us to it.

What We Compare, on Every Service

When we put two providers side by side, we score the same five things each time:

Real cash price at checkout — the price you actually pay for a named panel (basic metabolic panel, 5-test STD panel, full thyroid panel, Total + Free + SHBG testosterone), not a teaser or "from" price. Where a provider's checkout adds fees, we count them.
CLIA certification and lab network — which CLIA-certified laboratories actually run the sample. Most services we cover draw at Quest Diagnostics and Labcorp, which is why we say accuracy rarely differs between them; when a service uses a different collection method (like at-home finger-prick or saliva kits), we say so and treat it as a real accuracy tradeoff.
Turnaround, measured end-to-end — the clock from walking out of the draw station to the result PDF landing in the portal, not the marketing page's promise. We note when results run slower than advertised.
Draw-network size — how many locations you can actually walk into (for example, the 3,600+ locations RequestATest routes to versus the 4,500+ we counted for HealthLabs). A cheap panel is not cheap if the nearest draw station is 40 miles away.
What's included — panel composition marker by marker. Two "thyroid panels" at different prices are not comparable if one omits TPO antibodies; two "STD panels" differ if one skips hepatitis. We list the markers so you can compare like with like.

How We Verify Prices

Prices are checked directly on each provider's public site, and our cost guides state when the survey was done (for example, the April 2026 provider price survey behind our testosterone cost figures).
We recheck headline prices roughly every 30–45 days, and we flag any review where a listed price has drifted more than 10% from the figure in our write-up.
Pages carry an "Updated" date near the top. If a date looks stale, treat the price as a range to verify at checkout — direct-pay pricing moves.

We Order Tests Ourselves

Rankings that lead our comparisons are anchored in paid, anonymous orders placed with our own funds — to date, 7+ orders through RequestATest, with new panels tracked on a rolling basis. No complimentary accounts, no press passes, no expedited lanes. Where we have not ordered from a provider ourselves (for example, Ulta Lab Tests and Walk-In Lab at the time of writing), the review says so plainly and the assessment is labeled as based on surveyed pricing and panel composition rather than hands-on testing.

Rankings are not for sale. A provider cannot pay us to rank higher, and cannot preview a review before publication. We have recommended non-partner services over partners when the numbers favored them.

What We Don't Do

No sponsored placements. No provider has paid for a position in any comparison table, "best of" list, or verdict box on this site.
No medical advice. We are not clinicians. We compare the cost, logistics, and composition of tests — we do not tell you which test your health situation calls for, and we do not interpret results. That belongs with a licensed healthcare provider. Everything here is educational.
No invented credentials or reviewers. Our write-ups are by the site's editorial team as consumers who order and pay for tests; we do not attribute reviews to fictional experts.
